 a Difficult Way of Life
« Thread Started on Dec 9, 2007, 3:40pm »

She hobbled almost gracefully along the shore, making prints in the soft sand that no other creature on the island could make.. unless they had one missing leg. The time was mid-morning, and the maturing mare had come to revisit the first place she had been on Rotaku Isle. The trees to the femme's left were beginning to change to their seasonal colors, which reminded her of one of the happy times she had with her mother in her first autumn.

The mare heaved a sigh and continued to hobble along until she found a warm area of sand that had been in the sun for most of the day. The fem made a sort of half-rearing movement and coming down to the earth, folded her one front leg under her. This hurt a little, but her hind legs were still upright which kept most of her weight off her front leg.

She eventually moved her hid legs down as well. This whole process was quite tiring, but being a three-legged for all of her life, the mare had gotten used to the pain and the fatigue with every time she tried to run quickly or lie down. The fem lashed her ebon whipcord a few times at a fly that had been feasting off of the blood from her right thigh, and gradually laid her head down onto the sand.

Closing her deep, foresty green eyes, the femme tried to rest for at least a few minutes in the sun. She rested a lot lately. Mostly because now, there was actually time to rest. Though the female's muscles were strong and she was quite healthy, her way of life was very tiring and ultimately, very difficult.

She tried to rest, but also did her best to stay awake. She had never slept all that much before she had arrived on Rotaku Isle. One reason is because one never knows what's lurking in the shadows, just waiting for you to let down your guard during sleep. Another is that this mare knew that if she were to sleep, she would be visited by dreams and memories that she, more than anything, wanted to avoid.

Though, everyone needs sleep, and the mare had decided about a month after she arrived on the island that there weren't many predators to fear, if any. She knew that her dreams would continue to tear her apart inside, but sleep was important and therefore, the mare drifted off into a light sleep, still attempting to be aware of her surroundings.

She wasn't able to use her power of invisibility while she was asleep, as far as she knew. This meant that if someone or something were to arrive and see her, that there was no way to avoid them unless she was completely awake and able to use her power.

Sleep didn't come quickly, but the mare slept calmly in the sun, unknowing of what else was on this beach, at least for now.

Cursing all rocks larger than about one foot high, Afterlife lifted his now bruised frame from the ground, grunting in pain. That had hurt the light bay, as he had tripped over a rock that his echolocation had not been able to pick up. The young stallion snorted roughly, not just to activate his ecolocation, but to show his utter annoyance at the rock. He knew this beach better than anyone, so it must have only just washed up. The sound waves bounced back to him, alerting him to the fact that he was not alone here. Surprise swept through him as he located the scent of a female.

Tilting his head so that his mane fell into the empty sockets where his eyes used to be, Afterlife moved forard slowly, carefully lifting each hoof and setting it down slowly. He could sense the female breathing slowly, which might be because she was asleep which would help him. He didnt want to disturb her and didnt want her to find out that he had been there.

Why he was at the beach again was a mystery even to himself. After meeting Sinister, he had decided he needed some air from the stallion he now called a friend. He kenw the beach very well, having lived on it for a month before meeting his new friend, so he had come here instead of daring to venture somewhere else. So here he was, walking along the edge of the beach. He stopped to let the water wash over his hooves and legs, the waves touching up to just below where he knew his black markings ended. The water cooled the blind horse and if he knew the ocean better, he would wade further. But he dared not. If he fell in, he would not be able to save himself.

The dream the mare was having was fortunately a pleasant one. She could see the landscape perfectly. Her mother's eyes were as bright and as beautiful as ever. The two were crossing a small river, but Kitaki, as a foal in this dream, was having some trouble wading through the current with her balance a little off because of her missing limb.

Kitaki heard her mother's voice in the dream, and it made the mare smile in her sleep. Her mother told her to move as slow as she needed and that there was no need to rush things. Kitaki remembered the discussion the two had in their last and only summer together about the river and about change as the dream continued.

Kitaki noticed that she could almost hear the sloshing sounds of she and her mother stepping through the water. She twitched her auds a little and, waking slightly, noticed that it was not the sound of two, but just one horse.

The beautiful images of the happy dream faded abruptly and the mare's voids flashed open as she swiveled her cranial to the ocean's side of the beach. Kitaki made no attempt to rise herself from the warm sand, but just watched this strange horned brute walk in front of her through the soft-looking water.

After a few seconds of waking herself up, the mare realized that if this brute saw her, she would be done for. So, she got a little scared and hid herself with her power of invisibility. She thought she was pretty smart for a while, but then, still cloaked by her invisibility, she thought of something. Why would he just pass her without saying or doing anything? If he could see her and had caught her scent, then why had he not spoken to her or even spared a glance?

Feeling a bit ignored, the fem took another look at the strange stallion. After observing him for a moment or two, the mare's heart skipped a beat when she saw that this stallion bore no eyes. The fem emitted a gasp-like sound into the salty air as she observed this creature wide-eyed. She saw his facial expression as calm and docile and she no longer feared him. After restoring her image to normal eyesight, the mare did her best to stand up quickly before this misfit stallion would leave her behind in the sand.

The mare's leg got stuck under her after she had clumsily lifted her hindquarters first, but she managed to hop into a standing position before the eyeless stag was out of sight. She eyed him once again, lost for words. What would she say to a brute with no eyes? She shook her head, flailing her ebony tassels all about her head and realized she was still quite tired. Was she even thinking straight? Did he really have no eyes? Was he even there at all?

The salty spray misted his sides, darkening the light fur on his body. It felt wonderful, cool and refreshing against his tired frame. From what he knew, Sinister was claiming a territory, hopefully one that Afterlife could move about in easily. He wasnt sure how well the stallion would react to having a blind horse and working with another stallion, but Afterlife was willing to try. He needed someone to help him, and Sinister was that horse. He hoped.

The young stallion flicked an ear to listen. He could still hear that mare breathing, though it sounded like she had woken up. He kept walking, slowly, enjoying the feel of water brushing around his legs. He snorted, feeling the waves bounce and come back. The mare was still there. He could hear her moving around. Then, he heard her gasp and flinched; she must have noticed him.

Afterlife turned to face her slowly, sightless sockets veiled by black mane. He finally tossed his mane out of the sockets, hating the way it felt when they were inside of them. The foolish angels had not completely removed the nerve endings from the sockets, meaning anything that fell inside of them hurt badly. Forcing these thoguths away, he focused on the mare, trying to discern height, colours, breed. She was hornless, wingless, meaning she was proboably just a regular horse. But then, after snorting harshly, he noticed something.

She had a missing leg.

((God its short. Sorry Bef.))
